Porphyra umbilicalis is a macroalga that belongs to the red algae. Due to its red to purple color and its leaf-like lobes, the alga is easy to recognize. Umbilicalis is derived from the Latin word for "umbilical cord". The name derives from the fact that the thallus (the stalk) of the alga becomes surrounded by lobes as it grows, visually forming the "umbilicus" of the algae.
Porphyra umbilicalis is also known only by the common names umbilical purple kelp, purple kelp, skin kelp, and umbilical skin kelp.
These names all refer to the appearance of the alga, i.e. its color and shape. The name umbilical purple kelp is unique when it comes to the use of the common name.
Porphyra umbilicalis, like other Porphyra species, is found on all sea coasts worldwide, with an increased occurrence on the North Atlantic. Whether they are different species with similar characteristics is still under research.
